WMNF & Hideaway Cafe present an evening with Nic and Elam Stoltzfus, creators of The Great Florida Cattle Drive, both a PBS documentary and coffee table book showcasing the Great Florida Cattle Drive of 2016. The night will combine a film screening, Q&A and book signing with musical performance by J Robert, composer of original music for the documentary soundtrack.
Doors open at 6. Music at 8.
DOCUMENTARY HIGHLIGHTS HERITAGE OF FLORIDA CRACKER CATTLE, COW HUNTERS
Tallahassee, Fla. - Documentarian and author team Elam and Nic Stoltzfus will be at the Hideaway Cafe in St Petersburg on July 22 for a film screening and music event. The event is at 1756 Central Ave, doors open at 6pm and showtime is at 8pm. The works tell the story of the Great Florida Cattle Drive 2016, the history of Florida’s heritage cattle breed, and how Florida’s cow culture is being preserved for future generations. The documentary was filmed and produced by Blountstown residents Elam Stoltzfus and his son, Nic in partnership with PBS. Nic Stolzfus authored the companion coffee table book.
The event will feature music producer and Florida native, J. Robert, performing songs he composed for the soundtrack of the documentary. J. Robert has performed for the Florida Folk Festival accompanying John McEuen, Chief Jim Billie, Gypsy Wind, Jon Corneal, and has featured for Frank Thomas on the River Stage. J. Robert’s signature sounds are inspired by southwest Florida, blending violin, steel drums, and guitar.
“The story of the Cracker cattle and horses is one of the richest historical accounts,” said filmmaker and producer Elam Stoltzfus. “As we continue to work on the documentary and roll it out to the public, we really believe people will want to hear more about this, and we have a chance to educate people, entertain them, and bring some information to people here in Florida, and across the country.”
“One thing that excited me as a writer about the Great Florida Cattle Drive project is that it tells the story of this hidden history,” said screenwriter and co-producer Nic Stoltzfus. “It’s also one thing to read about a cattle drive from Kissimmee to Kenansville, but to actually go on the drive and interact with the people, and feel it, and smell it... that brought history to life for me.”
The documentary, narrated by America’s most beloved cowboy poet, Baxter Black, aired on all of Florida’s PBS stations Feb. 19 through March 3. Marco Island musician J. Robert Houghtaling composed the film’s original score, and fans of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will enjoy Grammy Award-winning John McEuen presence on the film’s soundtrack.
“WFSU Public Media was proud to partner with Live Oak Productions to bring this documentary to our audience throughout the Big Bend region.,” said David Mullins, General Manager of WFSU Public Media. “This project brings a unique story and also educates, informs and entertains in a special way. It has been great working with Elam and Nic providing counsel and working to ensure that the program will be seen across the state on Public Television.”

We invite all singer/songwriters to join us for this Thursday's open mic night, a.k.a. Living Room Live. Named Creative Loafing's Best of the Bay 2014 for "Best Open Mic Night", the Hideaway Cafe has opened up its doors and its stage for the past 8 years to countless rising talents as well as seasoned veterans who have made a career of music.
Consumate host John Kelly, a singer/songwriter himself, started this weekly tradition 8 years ago after building a stage as an extension of the recording studio. And the rest is history. The talent has been immense, the highlight reel endless... and the memories priceless. You won't find a more appreciative audience than you will here at St Petersburg's Original Listening Room!
Come down and check in with Phil, soundman extraordinaire, and get on the list. The list is now built using a lottery system in an effort to keep the night open to newcomers and to keep every Thursday new and exciting. This also encourages artists to support and get to know one another. Countless collaborations and musical relationships have been built on chance encounters here at "Living Room Live". For signup - you have an option to choose one of two time frames. Basically EARLY (7pm-9pm) and LATE (9:15 - close). Your name is pulled out of a hat and you have 15 minutes to do your thing. You can drop your name in starting at 6pm. Then singer/songwriters take the stage to share 2-3 original songs and then "pass the mic" so to speak. The signup pool fills up fast so be sure to get here early and be sure you are here for your chosen time frame. Artists - if you'd like to get the recording studio "in the red" for your set, be sure to indicate that when you sign up (solos only). For as low as $35, you can have files of your performance dropbox'd to you or handed over on a special keepsake "hideaway" flash drive. Be sure to leave your email and phone number if you choose to record.
Invite your favorite music loving friends out for some incredible original music from some of St Pete's finest! As always Thursdays are free so come on out and get a taste of what St Pete's Original Listening Room is all about.

My love of cooking started as a child. As a young child i cooked my with my grandmothers who were both great country cooks. I grew up with influences from German, Latin, and country cooking. One grandmother lived in Florida and although was raised country she was exposed to Cuban and Puerto Rican styles. The other was a master of slow cooked hearty food and Baked goods. My father was also an inspiration showing me that it was ok to be a tough guy and a great cook. And never tried to stop me from my passion. He also taught me the love of grilled and smoked meats. My wife Stephanie also has helped me to see my dreams of bringing my style of food and has always stood by me. As for me I have spent my life learning to combine Sweet, Salty, Savory, Spicy, And Smokey into the best BBQ. I hope you agree.
Please check back for updates since trucks may cancel due to inclement weather
